Hiking, backpacking and visiting national parks is how I spend most of my free time. I'm diving more into photography as a hobby now and hope that with learning and experience I can get some 'moderately tasteful' photos to share with everyone. Feel free to peruse through my galleries and enjoy.

Bisti Wilderness - NM - 033013 : Spent a late March Saturday in the Bisti (pronounced bis-tie) Wilderness in New Mexico. Home to some of the most amazing badland features around, the Bisti Wilderness is administered by the Bureau of Land Management as a pure wilderness. No trails, no paved roads and no services. My kind of place to visit and the temps were perfect.

Cane River Creole National Historical Park - LA - 032313 : Spent a rather cold and damp late March Saturday looking over the two plantations preserved by this park. The Oakland and Magnolia plantations first operated using slave labor, then transferred over to tenant farming and finally over to traditional farming that still goes on today. The structures on both plantations are preserved by the park service, but much of the surrounding land is still farmed by the descendants of the of the original families. Oftentimes family members show up to the park to provide tutorials on family history (no such luck for me when I was there).

Fair Park - TX - 031613 - 031713 : Spent a sunny weekend meandering around Fair Park near Dallas. Besides hosting the state fair every year there are a number of historical buildings and museums around. Much of the area was constructed around 1936 as part of the Texas Centennial Exposition.

Wilson's Creek National Battlefield - MO - 122212 - 122312 : My second stop on my extended Christmas 2012 trip up to Missouri. The battle of Wilson's Creek was fought on August 10, 1861 and resulted in a serious setback for the Union forces in Missouri. General Lyon with 4200 Union troops and Colonel Sigel with roughly 1700 attempted to take on roughly 10,000 Confederate forces under Major General Price. The goal was to capture the Confederates between Sigel coming in from the south and Lyon coming in from the north. Sigel's men were routed and Lyon's men suffered heavy losses in an area known as Bloody Hill. The fighting took place for roughly half a day before Lyon's men, shortly after he was killed in battle, retreated back to Springfield. The battle itself opened the Civil War in Missouri, but over the next three and a half years the Confederates couldn't establish a secure position in the state.
